DIGITAL FABRICATION: CNC TOOL PATH EXPLORATIONS

University of Washington, Seattle

These studies explore the creation of surface textures through the parametric control of CNC tool pathing. The intention of this study was to better understand how the precision and often machined-quality outcome of CNC surfacing might begin to illustrate hand-crafted qualities through intentional manipulation and control.

Inspiration for these studies included translating light and dark values of images, such as brush strokes, into tool pathing - controlling the boring depth of both translating paths and stationary plunges. I also looked at how the mathematical interaction between 3-dimensional wave forms could be represented by the tool pathing in different ways.
