Urban Elementary School

Seattle, WA

Conceptually this project began with an acknowledgement of the adjacent Denny Park (the oldest park in Seattle). As users move throughout the school, the park is consistently projected towards, framed, and referenced in each space. Organizationally, the floor plan radiates from a circulation core which is axially aligned with the park. Users are given a sense of exploration while remaining continually grounded by this center axis. Circulation corridors are kept to a minimum to maximize the efficiency and size of spaces. Classrooms are clustered by grade and operate self-sufficiently within their wing. This studio in particular focused on the development of a thermally efficient envelope, and the maximizing of natural light throughout the primary spaces.
