East Dundee Police Complex

East Dundee, IL (2016)

This project undertakes the adaptive re-use of a 1950’s fire station into a new police facility. The challenge of this project is found primarily in its very limited budget and extremely tight space for the programmatic requirements. These factors led to a strategy that sought to reveal the (often hidden) richness and character of the existing building, allowing a minimalist approach to the interior finishes. Through exploration, we discovered heavy timber trusses, maple flooring across the entire existing second floor, and 3x12 straight-grained floor joists above the ground level. The approach to the exterior also sought to maintain and celebrate the character of the existing building. A simple palette of face brick, metal panel, and storefront was applied carefully to the various in-fills and small stair and elevator additions, allowing the history of the project as a fire station to be told.
