Richton Park Public Library

Richton Park, IL (2014)

Conceptually, this project developed from a study of procession through layers. The program was organized first volumetrically, then clarified through the use of a strong circulation axis. By crafting the compression and expansion of space, users are drawn through the supplemental program elements into the main stack space. Here they are greeted with light, air, and views to nature. The materials and composition of the exterior elements take on somewhat whimsical characteristics. By playing with the simple tools of control joints and mechanical finishes, the façades of the library distinguish it from the surrounding suburban development, with little impact on the project cost.
