STEPHEN SHATSWELL

ARCHITECT

I think of architecture as a renaissance profession - a creative practice that demands an interest in all things. Whether it be aesthetics, physics, materials, people, economy, or communication, an architect must always strive to better understand the world around them.

I love the challenge of being an architect. From start to finish, from idea to place, and every part in between.

OBSERVATION

Sketches can describe a place. For me, they also keep memories. Lines on a page become smells and sounds and meals and people - the essence of a place experienced. Here are some that take me back.

ABOUT

ABOUT ME

I've practiced architecture for 10 years. Throughout that time I've been surrounded by wonderful and talented peers and mentors. For most of the projects I've participated in, my engagement has been holistic - from early design and programming through construction administration. I believe that every part of the process merits expertise. We aren't relay-runners; we are shepherds of design. I've worked on a broad variety of scales and typologies, all of which have helped me build a versatile skillset to approach new challenges. I believe in research, thinking by sketching, iteration, knowing your software well enough that it works for you, owning mistakes, and trusting the process.

I'm currently looking for a new position, and I'm excited to see what's next.
